Getting to Formentera

It might seem a bit of a hassle to get to the island given the fact that there is no airport. However, it is way easier than you have imagined! Especially if you add the excitement of the whole family for taking such a wonderful trip to this paradisiac place. First stop: Ibiza. A 30 minute flight from the spanish peninsula will do, usually from Barcelona or Valencia. There is also the possibility of taking the ferry that departs from Denia (Alicante) but that will take one day trip.

Once you get to the island of Ibiza, there is a 10 minute drive from the airport to the port where you should be catching the ferry to Formentera. There are plenty of boats doing this route everyday so don’t worry too much about waiting. The ferry will only take 30 minutes until you finally reach the port of La Savina where we highly recommend you rent a car to get to your accommodation to make the most of the island on time.

If you ask us, when planning a family trip we always keep in mind the physical limitations of your children. Family-friendly bike rides allow us to enjoy beautiful landscapes in which defense towers of the era of the pirates arise the curiosity of the little ones. Along the way there are a few places with great variety of birds, vegetation, sand dunes… that allow a walk in contact with pure nature.

Horse Riding

A route through the fields of Formentera, a lonely road between trees and panoramic views of the island, a romantic walk without the city buzz…Formentera has several parkways, roads and unique landscapes that are perfect for enjoying a pleasant a family day with the kids.

Cap de Barbaria

This is the southest point on the island. Driving to this area of Formentera is truly a wonder. Enjoy the high cliffs and savage waves crash into them at the bottom. Feel the breeze in your face and find peace of mind.

Reach through the narrow path the lighthouse at the very end: kids will be more than curious about this stunning building that leads boat into the harbour. From there you will be able to gaze the famous beaches of Migjorn and La Mola.

Water Activities

We should not forget that Formentera is blessed with incredible beaches where to take part in fun games and water activities and sports at the sea or in the bright white sand. Formentera can boast of having very calm waters thanks in large part to the Great Barrier surrounding sea grasses that also help filter the water leaving it completely crystalline.

The wide variety of goldfish can provide a wonderful day of snorkeling with kids, and many other child-friendly activities like kayaking, or renting a small boat to enjoy the sea and hidden coves.

Faro de la Mola

One of the highest points of the island of Formentera, on top a cliff over 120 meters above the sea is the lighthouse Faro de la Mola. To get to this lighthouse, follow the main road that crosses the entire island towards the town of Pilar de la Mola to the east end of Formentera.

La Mola lighthouse is one of the most impressive points of Formentera, located literally on the edge of a cliff with fabulous views of the sea. Lovers of natural landscapes and photography as well can go to this point to admire how the sun rises in the sea. Children will spend a pleasant time exploring the area and chasing lizards: they are the official symbol of Formentera!

Es Caló de Sant Agustí

Es Caló de Sant Agusti, or simply Es Caló, is a small town found along the main road to El Pilar de la Mola. Es Caló is the only nucleus that has formed around the coast, where some precious and rudimentary jetties are still used by fishermen. This pier was used as a port for transporting goods and people around Formentera.

It is one of the few points with a more authentic Mediterranean beauty and essence typical from Formentera. The environment consists of pine forests, but what really stands out is the coastline. Kids will love splashing in the sea and enjoying the crystal clear waters of this lovely beach.

Eat with Children

In fact, all beach clubs and restaurants in Formentera are pretty laid back, meaning going to have a bite or dine in one of them is a highly recommended option. Plus, the fish there has been caught that same day! Fully fresh seafood is served in most of the restaurants and beach bars that face the ocean. Exquisiteness and luxury at your fingertips.

Our favourite restaurants to go with kids would be Juan y Andrea, a must in the island right inside the natural reserve of Playa de Ses Illetes; Beso Beach, #nohayveranosinbeso (there’s no summer without a kiss) a fun and entertaining beach club where kids will have a blast playing in the sand while you take a sip at their marvelous cocktails.

Can Dani – the sole 5 star Michelin restaurant in the Balearic islands – is a safe choice when deciding to enjoy a lovely evening by the candlelight savoring their exquisite tasting menu; and last but not least Maricastaña, coming straight from Madrid this charming restaurant offers all sorts of Mediterranean food with a bistró touch your kids will most likely enjoy!
